Estuary and wetland, a lookout for migrating birds

Río de la Jara

A small coastal river that comes down from Los Alcornocales and dies on Los Lances, creating an estuary protected since 1989, a strategic stopover for the birds of the strait.

The spot

The Río de la Jara is a short watercourse (around 15 km) that rises in the sierras of Fates, Saladavieja and Ojén, inside the Parque Natural de Los Alcornocales, within the municipality of Tarifa. It runs south-west and flows out onto the Playa de Los Lances, inside the Parque Natural del Estrecho. Where it meets the sea it forms a brackish wetland whose shape changes with the tides, the floods and the sand deposits.

The estuary and the adjoining stream form a Paraje Natural protected since 1989, in the heart of the Playa de Los Lances. The Río de la Jara is also part of a Special Area of Conservation (ZEC) within the European Natura 2000 network. The ecological role of the site is clear: it is one of the main resting points for birds crossing the strait, particularly on days of strong wind that force them to land. Herons, egrets, waders and migrating passerines stop here in large numbers in spring and autumn.

On the walking side, the path along the river mouth links central Tarifa to Valdevaqueros via the beach and back-beach of Los Lances. Part of it follows the route of the GR-145, the “Sendero Europeo del Arco Atlántico”. The walk is flat, sandy, exposed to the wind, and offers one of the best viewpoints over the bay at the end of the day. Beware of the current at the mouth when crossing on foot: on a falling tide, it pushes out to sea.
