Estuary and wetland, a lookout for migrating birds
Río de la Jara
A small coastal river that comes down from Los Alcornocales and dies on Los Lances, creating an estuary protected since 1989, a strategic stopover for the birds of the strait.
The spot
The Río de la Jara is a short watercourse (about 15 km) that rises in the sierras of Fates, Saladavieja and Ojén, within the Parque Natural de Los Alcornocales, in the municipal area of Tarifa. It runs down to the south-west and empties onto the Playa de Los Lances, inside the Parque Natural del Estrecho. Its meeting with the sea creates a brackish wetland that changes configuration with the tides, the floods and the sand deposits.
The estuary and the adjoining stream form a Paraje Natural protected since 1989, at the heart of the Playa de Los Lances. The Río de la Jara is also part of a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) within the European Natura 2000 network. The site's ecological role is clear: it is one of the major resting points for the birds crossing the strait, especially on days of strong wind that force them to land. Herons, egrets, waders and migratory passerines stop there in great numbers in spring and autumn.
On the hiking side, the path running along the river mouth links central Tarifa to Valdevaqueros via the beach and back-beach of Los Lances. Part of it matches the route of the GR-145, the "Sendero Europeo del Arco Atlántico". The walk is flat, sandy, exposed to the wind, and offers one of the best viewpoints over the bay at the end of the day. Watch out for the current at the mouth when crossing on foot: on the ebb tide, it pushes out to sea.
