Duna de Bolonia

Its formation is a textbook case of aeolian geomorphology. The Bolonia coastline runs south-east/north-west, and the levante constantly drives a stream of fine sand that sweeps the beach to the far end of the cove. There, the sand meets the barrier of pine woodland almost at right angles, stops and builds up. The result is a living dune: at its crest, the struggle is continuous between the advancing sand and the pine wood holding its ground: the dune rises above the pines, and the surplus sand is carried off by the strongest winds.

Access is from the western car park of Bolonia beach. You walk a few minutes across soft sand, then tackle the ascent with nothing but your hands. Going up by motorbike or bicycle and taking sand away are prohibited. The sunset from the top is one of the area's emblematic sights: a view due west over the bay, over the Sierra de la Plata on the Faro Camarinal side, and over Morocco in the background. Worthwhile all year round, with care on days of very strong levante, when the sand stings.
