Untouched cove between two capes, reachable only on foot
A beach hidden below the Faro Camarinal, with no services at all, between Atlanterra and Bolonia, reached only after a walk through the pines.
The Playa del Cañuelo hides on the stretch of coast that separates the bay of Zahara/Atlanterra from that of Bolonia, just below the Faro Camarinal. It is one of the last truly untouched beaches in the whole province: no chiringuito, no car park at the foot of the sand, no vehicle access. The cove is framed by the limestone cliffs that supplied the stone for the Roman buildings of Baelo Claudia, and stays protected by its inclusion in the Parque Natural del Estrecho.
Access is from Atlanterra: you take the turn-off before the Río Cachón, then follow the CA-2216 towards the Faro Camarinal. Just before the lighthouse building, a gate blocks car traffic, and a small car park serves as a starting point. If space runs out, there are spots lower down along the road, near the accesses to the Playa de los Alemanes. On foot, you go up the road about 400 metres to the lighthouse, then several paths converge and descend through the vegetation to the beach. Reckon on 30 to 40 minutes' walk in total, non-technical but sloping terrain.
The beach has no services: no water, no built shade, no refreshment stand. You have to bring everything: water, snacks, a parasol if needed, bin bags to carry out your waste. That is what makes its value: you often find yourself among ten people spread over hundreds of metres of sand, with clear water fed by the Atlantic currents. The best window is May-June and September-October: mild temperatures, few people, a dry path.
