Tarifa's bouldering benchmark, ten minutes on foot from Bolonia
The best-known bouldering sector in the area, in the pine wood above the bay of Bolonia, on the sierra leading to the Faro Camarinal.
El Helechal is the bouldering spot that made Bolonia known among climbers. It lies in the pine forest clinging to the flank of the Sierra de la Plata, just a hundred metres from a car park accessible from Bolonia or Atlanterra. The approach is one of the shortest on the peninsula: you leave the car, walk a few minutes among the pines, and come upon the first boulders scattered in the vegetation.
The rock is a fine sandstone of good quality, marbled with white, yellow and reddish lichens that make the visual signature of the spot. The grain is fine enough to offer excellent grip even in light humidity, which is rare in the south of Andalusia. The topos list several dozen numbered boulders, from easy to committing, but the main interest remains the atmosphere: you climb in the heart of the Mediterranean forest, ten minutes' walk from the beach.
El Helechal is entirely included in the Parque Natural del Estrecho. The direct consequence: the area is subject to seasonal closure orders from 1 March to 31 August, put in place in recent years to protect the nesting of the griffon vultures. The useful season therefore runs mainly from autumn to winter. Camping and bivouac are also forbidden on the viewpoint car parks all year round and on most accesses in summer.
