Tarifa's hidden cove, the only Mediterranean spot around
A pocket beach between two seas, a stone's throw from the old town.
Playa Chica is Tarifa's geographical anomaly: it is the only beach in the area that faces the Mediterranean, not the Atlantic. Wedged between the port and the isthmus leading to the Isla de las Palomas (the southernmost point of continental Europe), it is barely 200 metres long and stays protected from the prevailing swell. For that reason, it is not a board-sport spot in the classic sense: no kite, no windsurf, no wing.
Its calling lies elsewhere. Playa Chica is the swimming spot of Tarifeña families, the most accessible snorkelling corner in the area (rocky bottom, octopus, salema, sometimes shoals of barracuda in summer). The water is strangely warmer than on the Atlantic coast, and clearer still when the levante blows hard on the other side of the isthmus: the wind passes overhead without touching the sea.
For SUP and swimmers, Playa Chica is also the ideal starting point to watch the colonies of cormorants and Audouin's gulls around the Isla de las Palomas. At low tide, you can almost walk across to the western rocks where anglers tease sea bream and gilthead.
The atmosphere is resolutely local and family-oriented, with the view of Africa 14 km away that seems within arm's reach. It is the flip side of Los Lances: no kite, no music, just the calm breathing of the Strait.
