Isla de Tarifa
The fortified islet linked to Tarifa by a man-made causeway since 1808, the physical border between Mediterranean and Atlantic, and military to this day.
The spot
Isla de las Palomas (often simply called Isla de Tarifa) is the southern tip of continental Europe, barely 11 km from the Moroccan coast. It is a fortified rocky spur, once separated from the peninsula and linked to the town by an artificial causeway built in 1808 by Antonio González Salmón. That same strip of land physically separates the Mediterranean (east side, towards Playa Chica) from the Atlantic (west side, towards Los Lances). It is one of the very few maritime borders that can be crossed on foot.
The island was used from antiquity by the Phoenicians, who had a trading point there: the remains of a harbour and at least five Phoenician-Punic funerary hypogea dating from the 6th to the 4th century BC have been found. The present military compound, still owned by the Ministry of Defence, was built gradually from the 19th century onwards. In 2003, the island and the waters around it were incorporated into the Parque Natural del Estrecho, adding reserve status to its historic military function.
For visitors, access is strictly controlled: only guided tours with limited numbers are allowed, with prior booking at the Tarifa tourist office. As for diving, the waters around the island are among the richest on the Andalusian coast: rocky seabeds, strong currents, Mediterranean-Atlantic fauna. The north face looks onto Playa Chica, a pocket beach on the Mediterranean popular with tarifeña families and two minutes from the centre.
