Coastal walk to the 16th-century lighthouse, above former Roman quarries
A short hike between Bolonia and the Cape of Gracia, out to the lighthouse built on a watchtower of Felipe II, overlooking the quarries that supplied the stone for Baelo Claudia.
The Faro de Camarinal stands at the Cabo de Gracia, at the western entrance of the Parque Natural del Estrecho. It belongs to the municipality of Tarifa, but the simplest access is from Zahara de los Atunes: you skirt the Río Cachón towards the Atlanterra development, then follow the lighthouse signs along the CA-2216 to the car park at the last gate. About 3 km from Bolonia, another waymarked start lets you begin the walk from the eastern side of the bay.
The most frequented section (from the car park to the lighthouse itself) is about 1.7 km, or 30 to 45 minutes' walk, with a gentle gradient along the coastal path. A longer loop, out and back, gives 3.5 km in about an hour. Several topos extend the route to the Playa del Cañuelo, an extra 1.3 km from the lighthouse following the coast. The path crosses the pine forest, skirts the cliffs, and opens onto panoramic viewpoints towards Bolonia and the strait.
The current lighthouse was built on the site of a former 16th-century watchtower, the Torre Vieja or Torre del Cabo de Gracia, erected under Felipe II to protect the Cadiz coast from Barbary raids. All around the cape, you can make out the working faces of the Roman quarries: this is where the builders of Baelo Claudia took the calcarenite for the columns, arches and capitals of the ancient city. At least four extraction faces have been identified in the area.
