The small historic spot at the foot of Tarifa's centre
A town-centre beach where Tarifa learned to windsurf in the 1980s.
The Balneario, or Playa del Balneario, is the small urban beach backing onto Tarifa's historic centre, just after Playa Chica heading up towards Los Lances. Three hundred metres of sand, a former bathing establishment of which the white arches facing the sea remain, and a history: it is here, in the 1980s, that the first pioneers of European windsurf planted their sails before Valdevaqueros became the world kite hub.
Today, the Balneario is a minor spot for board sports but not without interest. The levante comes in side-onshore, softened by the buildings and the port jetty, which makes it a learning ground for wingfoil and SUP in strong wind: when Valde is unrideable at 40 knots, the Balneario stays at 25-28 knots, more manageable. Kite is technically allowed outside the summer season, but the launch zone is narrow and lined by the promenade.
Its true contemporary vocation is social. It is the evening beach, where locals go jogging on the promenade running along the port, where children learn to swim in a sea calmer than at Los Lances. At low tide, a tongue of sand emerges towards the rocks of the Isla, forming a natural lagoon where kids paddle safely.
On the heritage side, the Balneario opens directly onto the Puerta de Jerez and Tarifa's medieval ramparts: in five minutes you go from the sand to the old town. That is its charm: a threshold between the sea and the city, the place where you cross between two worlds.
