The small technical crag above the pass, between Algeciras and Tarifa

El Bujeo

Around forty sandstone routes perched at the Bujeo pass, legendary among climbers of the Campo de Gibraltar since the late 1970s.

The spot

El Bujeo takes its name from the mountain pass of the same name, on the N-340 between Algeciras and Tarifa. It is the only climbing crag located within the municipal district of Algeciras, and one of the oldest in the area: the first routes were opened there by the pioneers of the Club Alpino Al-Hadra in the late 1970s, among them the "Centenaria", a 25-metre artificial line traced up the highest wall.

The site brings together some forty routes in all, from short easy lines to overhanging artificial pitches, with a few boulder problems in between. The main sector, turned inland, is very demanding: all its routes have been re-equipped with glue-in bolts. The sea-facing sector is less interesting technically and remains a beginners' area. The rock is a medium-quality sandstone, peppered with small mushroom-shaped protuberances and broken up by slabs: very frictional, technical climbing, the opposite of the athletic dyno.

It is the perfect crag when the levante explodes on the Tarifa coast and the limestone spots of the sierra become unclimbable. Visitors remain very local, and the atmosphere is that of a small garden better known to the climbers of the Campo de Gibraltar than to tourists. Like San Bartolo and Betis, El Bujeo lies within the Parque Natural del Estrecho, same rules, same possible nesting restrictions depending on the annual orders.
